• (Ascent of Man, The series, Part 5) Mathematics--Describing mathematics as "a ladder for mystical as well as rational thought" that man has climbed in his intellectual ascent, Dr. Bronowski centers his survey on the early mathematician, Pythagoras. On the Greek island of Samos, where Pythagoras was born, he outlines that thinker's discovery that aural and visual phenomena are governed by exact ratios. Follows the impact of Pythagorean thought on the Islamic empire, Moorish Spain and Renaissance Europe. The relation of mathematics to musical harmony, early astronomy and perspective in painting is also explored.
