Mulga Seed Ceremony

  • Shows a ceremony meant to promote the fertility of mulga, a desert tree valued for food and fuel. A legendary conflict between the mulga seed men and the lizard men is enacted and blood is ritually spilt. The performers then climb a 1,500-foot ridge to a small cave where sacred boards were once kept. They visit several sacred stones where, with the accompanying exhortations of the ritual leaders, they symbolically cast mulga seed to the four winds. At night the men perform a sedentary dance around a fire. Next morning they visit a cave before painting themselves for the afternoon's ceremonial conclusion--the vigorous dance of the mulga seed men.
