Mondragon Experiment, The

- Initiated 22 years ago in a climate of fierce hostility from Spain's Franco regime, the Mondragon cooperative movement was a bold approach to the economic reconstruction of the Basque country through community self-reliance and democratic management. From a single small factory, and the inspiration of an activist priest, the growth of the idea is followed to the present network of 65 enterprises with 15,000 worker-members producing machine tools, appliances, agricultural products and allied retail and social services.
