Message in the Rocks

- (Nova series) For centuries, scientists have sought to explain how our planet was formed and how it evolved into its present structure. The answer may lie in meteorites and ancient rocks. Shows how studying specimens in the Antarctic have doubled our holdings in meteorites, and last year the oldest fossils discovered to date--3.5 billion years old--were identified in a remote desert of Australia. Other geologic events such as Mount St.. Helens, matter from space and masses of ancient bacteria hardened into rock are studied to provide clues to the puzzle of the Earth's origins.
