- (Lecturer: Marty Richards, M.S.W., A.C..S.W.; Director of Social Services, Foss Nursing Home, Seattle) Basic elements of communication and its breakdown are discussed during the introduction of this taped seminar for nurses, social workers and general staff of any nursing facility. "For sending messages to anyone we need to remove roadblocks, be brief and make ourselves understood." The second rule is to listen. Put the person you're talking to at ease. Avoid distracting behavior. Listen to understand and not just to reply. Specific problems in communicating with older adults are discussed.
