Mau Mau

- The common interpretation of "Mau Mau" is a myth, created and sustained by propaganda and fear. Mau Mau was, in fact, a political and military response to repression and armed aggression born of sixty years of resistance to colonial rule. Not the movements' real name, Mau Mau was what its opponents called the Land and Freedom Army. More than 15,000 Africans died and hundreds of thousands were arrested. In the end, the British handed Kenya over to an African government composed largely of "loyalists" and others untainted by participation in the armed struggle. Thus in winning, Mau Mau also lost.
