Aplysia and Its Giant Nerve Cells: A Glimpse into the Cellular Basis of Behavior

• The Californian Sea Hare, Aplysia californica, is seen in one of its natural habitats and gives a brief description of its general features and behavior patterns. In the laboratory readily accessible giant nerve cells are found in its nervous system. Experiments show that different neurons show different types of activity. Neuron interaction is cellular as shown by a study of the stereotyped escape response of Tritonia in which certain cells "decide" whether or not to command the escape response. Concludes by observing the behavior of Aplysia when confronted with a choice in a Y-maze.
