Incident at Brown's Ferry

• The world's largest nuclear power plant at Brown's Ferry, Alabama, was shut down for 15 months in 1975 to repair $150 million in fire damage. The blaze was started by a workman who lit a candle to check for air leaks. Some say the accident could have caused a catastrophic release of radiation; others maintain that safety precautions were more than adequate. Still, the crucial questions remain: what are the potential hazards of nuclear reactors and are we sufficiently protected?
