- (Christians, The series, Part 9) The earliest settlers in New England were concerned with one specific liberty: the freedom to worship God according to their faith. The forebearers of the Pennsylvania Mennonites were the Anabaptists, a group that suffered the greatest persecution in Europe. The Calvinists in England were called Puritans and in America, with their determination to survive in a hostile wilderness, became a symbol of self-reliance. And yet they became famous for the very intolerance they had fled. Philadelphia was the center for the American Revolution where both the Constitution and the Bill of Rights were signed. It seemed that freedom had been won and would forever be guaranteed.
