- Presents time-lapse motion pictures of Western Hemisphere weather compiled from about 16,000 individual photographs of the infrared (IR) emission obtained by the Stationary Meteorological Satellite-2 (SMS-2). Photographs of the IR emission from the earth and its atmosphere color the various temperatures in 256 shades of grey, from black to white to indicate hot to cold. Thus the weather is visible as an evolving topographic temperature map. Included is the movement of Hurricane Katrina (September 2, 1975) showing its extraordinarily well defined structure.
