The Kalahari (!Kung) Bushmen of southwest Africa wage a constant war for survival against the hot, arid climate and the unyielding soil. The focus of The Hunters is on four men who undertake a hunt to obtain meat for the hungry villagers. The chronicle of the exhausting thirteen day hunt is one of suspense: days and nights of seeking a prey; the shooting of a giraffe with poisoned arrows; the long agonizing trailing of the wounded animal until, repeatedly pierced at close range, she falls. Happily they cut up and divide the flesh for the trek home and, at the end, they joyously share "the telling of the hunt" to young and old. A classic in documentary filmmaking.
