Hunters of the Seal: A Time of Change
- 1976 ----- color ----- 32 min ----- 16mm
- (Nova series) Once, a Netsilik Eskimo would crouch motionless over a small breathing hole cut in the ice waiting for the seal below him. He had one chance to kill it. If he missed, he and his family might have starved. If he caught the seal, he called his hunting partners together in a ceremony to appease the immortal soul of the dead seal, before dividing it. Today, through the efforts of the Canadian government, the Netsilik have settled down, living in houses at Pelly Bay, wholly dependent upon airlifted provisions for their survival--Christians who no longer worry about the seal's immortal soul. The Netsilik's greatest struggle, to find meaning in his new life, still lies ahead of him.
