As one of South America's newest independent nations, Guyana has sought to strengthen her economy and national pride by the means of self-help programs. Prime Minister Forbes S. Burnham describes the hopes to involve the masses in the economic effort by the use of the co-operative. Guyana's struggle with Al-Can Aluminium illustrates the basic drive of the new country: control of the natural resources by the country itself, rather than by outside nations with little or no interest in the welfare and economy of Guyana and her people.
