- (Odyssey series) There are, notes underwater archaeologist George Bass, perhaps a million shipwrecks hidden under the world's sand and sea grass. Examines three recently excavated wrecks, revealing some of the techniques of modern underwater archaeology, attempted reconstructions both of cargo and of ships and some theories advanced about ancient shipbuilding processes. The wrecks are examples of the "frame first," "hull first" and the transition stage between the two. The development of more efficient shipbuilding technologies is discussed in light of social and economic forces.
