During the French Revolution, atheism and revolution went hand in hand for the first time. The same year the monarchy was swept away Marx and Engels published The Communist Manifesto and predicted the eventual overthrow of all the old European powers. Marx expected the first revolution to take place in an industrial nation but the first people to adopt his ideas were the poorest, most oppressed in the world: the people of Holy Russia. After seizing the government the Marxist revolutionaries seized the properties of the Church and began to undermine religion. Yet religion is anything but dead in Russia. The Orthodox Church exists nearly as well under a commissar as under a czar.
