With new technology man may be able to perfect plants and animals, to increase food supplies, fight cancer and disease and control human development. But some scientists have become frightened of this awesome new power. Might they create a microbe with unpredictable and perhaps dangerous new properties? Or might a laboratory accident unleash an irrevocable disaster--diseases for which there are no cures? The scientific, moral and legal questions are explored.
