- The phrase of the title was coined by the Chinese for the visit of the American ping-pong team. The hosts, fairly certain that the home team would win, tactfully chose to emphasize hospitality over competition. The slogan caught on, as slogans do in China, and it now expresses the spirit of all sport there. While the Chinese have enthusiastically adopted many Western sports, they have not abandoned their traditional entertainments. Their acrobats, jugglers and gymnasts are among the world's best.
