Flow Instabilities

- The main experiment, generation of surface waves by wind in a water channel, is used to illustrate the general features of flow instability. The curve of neutral stability is developed by systematically varying wind speed and wave frequency. Shorter experiments suggest the pervasiveness of instabilities in fluid flow phenomena and demonstrate the existence of parameters with critical values which include instabilities in circular Couette flow and stratified fluids, convective instabilities, vortex shedding and others.
