  • The simplest conventions give a narrative shape to Georges Rouquier's lyrical documentary of French farm life. The events of a year in the life of a farm family intercut with views of nature take on a ritualistic cast. The familiar gestures of life are set in bold relief against this timeless background, the enormous vat of dough kneaded with such effort, the crunch of the bread being sliced by the head of the family, children walking in a shallow stream on their way home from school. It is the cycle of the seasons, likened to the cycle of life through birth, growth, decay and death, that roots the film firmly in the populist humanism of the first half of the 20th century.
